Walking Grandma Home by Nancy Bo Flood, and illustrator, Ellen Shi, is a touching story of a young boy who learns about the process of losing a loved one, and how to process the many emotions that comes with it-fear, grief, and joyful remembrance. Grandma tells Lee that she will soon be "going home", but this is confusing to Lee as he wonders, isn't she already home? As Grandma's health gets worse and her death approaches, Lee learns what it means to "walk Grandma home" to heaven. Lee learns to also reflect on his good memories as he deals with his grief alongside with his extended family.
This story is ideal for kids who have recently experienced the death of a loved one, or is learning about grief for the first time, as well as for children with aging grandparents and family and friends experiencing loss.
