This biography, by G Holden Pike written six years before the death of Spurgeon in 1892, contains first hand details of the life and ministry of Charles Haddon Spurgeon. The author in his introduction writes that he has “endeavoured in this volume what I thought the public would like to know respecting Mr Spurgeon and his work without unduly prying into the Pastor’s private life.”
Pike wrote this book with all the resources he could obtain at the time of writing, striving to omit errors and that would not cause offence to the reader or to the subject matter in hand. There are many biographies written of the life and ministry of “The Prince of Preachers” but there are very few were written within the life-time of Spurgeon and that makes this book particularly interesting for the reader as they discover more about the life of one of God’s faithful servants.
