Our Higher Calling by J Sidlow Baxter and published by Classics.
Not long ago I noticed a publication bearing the caption, “Recall to Sanity.” I immediately fell to considering how needful is such a recall in this nervous, palpitating machine-age of ours, with its wheels and wings, its wars and woes, its hyper-tensions and soothing pills. Then, by an easy, almost inevitable transition, my thoughts began relating it all to the churches, especially those which are still evangelical; and I found myself commenting, “If the world needs a recall to sanity, how urgently do the churches today need another recall to sanctity!” Fuel was thereby added to my fervent longing that the companies of our Lord’s people might be set aglow again by a revived experience of Spirit-wrought sanctification. This, in turn, led to my preparing the expositions which now appear in this book.
The contents of this book were prepared as a series for preaching rather than as a treatise for printing; therefore, although there is little actual repetition in the successive addresses, there are recurrent references to certain aspects which would have been grouped together if the work had been originally prepared as a book. To some readers, however, its present arrangement may be advantageous rather than otherwise. It makes the treatment less formal, without being any less methodical, and gives added warmth without any loss of depth. May the dear Lord who is “made unto us wisdom, even righteousness and sanctification and redemption”, be pleased to bless these pages to every reader.
