The Modern Gift of Tongues, Whence Is It?

In the pursuit of holiness we need to be wary as well as eager. Heedless impetuosity exposes the pursuer to the danger and delay of being ambushed. Moreover foes may profess to be friends and may skilfully further their own designs while earnestly professing to assist in ours. “Discerning the spirits” was so needful in the apostolic days that it was a specially given power entrusted to some to benefit of all - and in our days of where “tongue speaking” is enthusiastically encouraged in some quarters, it is still needful. It is therefore imperative that believers of every age distinguish carefully between what is of the Lord and what is not, and this is in our own personal experiences, as well as in the general movements of the day.
We must keep in mind that it is not without significance that in only one place in scripture - 1 Corinthians 12:10 - where this power of discerning spirits is spoken of by name and it is mentioned between the gift of prophesying and that of speaking in tongues, as if these two spiritual exercises in which the false spirits would most readily and powerfully operate and deceive.
