A History of the Waldenses by James A Wylie and published by Classics.

The Waldenses holds a special place in our Christian heritage, and following the teaching of Peter Waldo, the Waldenses had emerged in the latter part of the 12th century. Their defence of the faith of Jesus despite persecution and martyrdom is unique in the Christian church. During the long centuries of papal supremacy, they defied the crushing power of Rome and rejected its false doctrines and human traditions.

But unlike other persecuted Christian groups, like the Albigensians, they were not completely wiped out by any “crusade” and instead carried on to the Reformation and even afterwards. However they were still persecuted for their beliefs, most notoriously when Provencal and Papal solders, killed hundreds or even thousands of Waldenses at Merindol.

This stalwart people cherished and preserved the pure Word of God. Throughout this time, despite the great danger involved, Waldensian missionaries left their rocky fortresses to share portions of Scripture with those searching for the fight of God's Word.
