There are four familiar methods used when interpreting the Book of the Revelation. These are the called the Preterist, Futurist, Historicist and the Spiritual
The Preterist view considers that the 332 reference in the book to the persons, countries and symbols of the Old Testament prove that the whole content has passed. On the other hand the Futurist idea implies that chapters 1 – 3 apply to the Church, and the majority of Chapters 4 – 22 will find its fulfilment in a coming dispensation.
The Historicist conception teaches that the content of the Book is a prophetic panorama of the events of the present age. These it says have been fulfilled in the course of history which we may examine and say with certainty “This is THAT which was spoken by the prophet.”
The Spiritual interpretation considers the content as a general description of the conflicts between right and wrong, and good and evil through all times, but without specific application to definite events. The main object is to enlighten, encourage and edify God’s people under every varying condition.
The summary contained in this small volume is submitted to the reader after a close study of all four methods with a background of classroom lecturing for twenty years, although technical exposition of the text has largely been omitted.
