It has long been the habit, both of readers and interpreters to treat the Second Gospel as a mere abridgement supplement or compilation, without any independent character or value of its own. Yet there is something in its structure which makes its eminently fit to give the first impression of the Gospel History and prepare the reader for the study of other Gospel books.
The reader will note the absence of all references to other writers, some of which the author holds in high esteem.
This is due partly owing to the want of space, but also to the fact that the design of the book is not to supercede or rival other works upon Mark's Gospel but to supplement them by preserving the specific fruits of the author's own labours in the same great field.
