John Newton, converted slave trading sea captain was appointed Vicar of the Parish in Olney, in 1764 and such was the power of his preaching that newly converted aspiring poet William Cowper moved to the town in n1767, in order to be under the influence of his preaching.

From that time there developed what both men chose to describe as 'a true and lasting friendship' and from this friendship came some of the best known and most loved hymns in the world.

It is a fascinating story of two men from widely differing backgrounds, a drawn together by two compelling factors - their genuine love for God and their love of literature.
